Located in the heart of Lewisburg at 107 South 1st Avenue and Commerce Street, the Lewisburg County Courthouse stands as a majestic testament to classical revival architecture. Built between 1928 and 1929, this iconic three-story building is a prominent feature of Courthouse Square.
Architectural Splendor
Designed by the esteemed architectural firm Hart, Freeland, and Roberts, and constructed by Martin & Warlick, the courthouse showcases an elegant classical revival style. The buff-colored brick and concrete structure is rectangular in shape, providing a robust yet refined aesthetic.
The east facade is particularly striking, featuring eight imposing columns that span from the second to the third story. These columns frame glass panel windows, allowing natural light to illuminate the interior spaces. Above the columns, a wide header supports a clock that sits proudly above the roofline, a distinctive feature that draws the eye.
Interior Layout and Function
Inside, the courthouse is meticulously organized to serve its judicial functions. The large courtroom on the second story is designed for significant proceedings, while the Chancery Court courtroom on the southeast side of the first story and a smaller courtroom on the northwest side of the basement cater to various legal needs. The courthouse is home to the County Circuit Court, County Chancery Court, County General Sessions Court, and County Juvenile Court of the 17th Judicial District.
Renovations and Modernization
Over the years, the Lewisburg County Courthouse has undergone several renovations to preserve its historical integrity while updating its facilities. Major renovations were carried out in 1974 and again in 1998. A more extensive renovation took place from 2008 to 2015, overseen by Quinn Evans Architects with DF Chase and Orion Construction as the contractors. These updates have ensured that the courthouse remains a functional and beautiful space for the community.
